Grooming: Who Cares?

Why are vulnerable girls living in children’s homes falling victim to grooming and sexual abuse?
The recent convictions of nine men involved in a child sex ring in Rochdale revealed the tactics of the perpetrators. But the investigation also showed failures in the care system and its inability to protect residents of children’s homes.
In this 30 minute long audio podcast, journalist Simon Cox asks what’s going wrong. This podcast is an episode of Radio 4’s The Report documentary series which was broadcast by the BBC on 31 May 12.
This podcast is well-suited for listening to on an iPod or mobile phone, and will be of interest to those working in residential care. Many of the issues are at a strategic/policy level, making it a valuable resource for CPD.

Children, families & child protection

IRISSchildprotection

Allegations of abuse lead to an unfolding child protection case scenario which prompts us to consider the welfare of three children and their parents’ rights.

This is one of 22 multimedia learning resources published by Scotland’s Institute for Research and Innovation in Social Services. The resources are designed for social work students and practitioners, but will also be valuable to others working with children and families. This case study by Mel Cadman & Kathryn Cameron has been designed as a focus for learning about the legal, ethical and practice issues emerging from a child protection case scenario. It consists of five short video clips with transcripts of the dialogue, and it takes about 15 minutes to watch in total.

This is an excellent resource! it is well-structured and there is much to learn from the components of this moving and realistic case study. The authors suggest that learners be asked to interpret and assess the unfolding scenario of complex needs and to consider how to respond. In an ideal world I’d have liked the authors to pose some questions of this nature and provide references to extend the learning. Link: http://content.iriss.org.uk/childprotection

Every Child Everywhere

This online child protection training course was launched in 2009 by the travel association ABTA who developed it jointly with ECPAT UK.

Every Child Everywhere offers to help us develop and follow child protection policies and procedures. It is available to anyone, not just those working in the travel industry.

This course consists of 3 modules:

  1. Following Child Protection Policies & Procedures
  2. Implementing Child Protection Policies & Procedures
  3. Developing Child Protection Policy and Procedures

This attractive course uses case studies and interactive exercises. Links are provided throughout to relevant organisations and sources of information for further exploration. I estimate it takes about one hour to work through each module, and much longer if you download & read all the literature. I think the second and third modules would be a really useful starting point for organisations who are developing their own Child Protection Policies & Procedures, as many of the principals are fundamental to a wide range of settings.
